Since neighboring areas required plenty of wood, loggers were among the first European residents of Livingston, NJ. Plus, Canoe Brook and the hickory poles that flourished in the woods were perfect for nets for shad fishing, which was a thriving industry in the waterways of the New York area.

Previously, Livingstone, NJ, was a lumber and farming town, which were the primary sources of income. Another industry became huge during the Civil War—shoemaking. Once the Civil War was over, another industry butted into the town—the dairy industry.

Referred to as Mt. Pleasant Avenue, the first turnpike of NJ ran through Livingston. Stagecoaches could travel from Newark to Morristown in a single day.

After the construction of highways and the advent of automobiles, Livingston became an ideal town for commuting. After the 2nd World War, housing development replaced the farms in the area. Consequently, the town grew, peaking in 1970.
