History — from the homeland of the Lenape Native Americans to Montclair


Montclair, NJ, has a deep-rooted history, and the town boasts 6 historic districts with a number of preserved historical buildings among an array of architecturally significant homes.

​​​​​​​During the completion of the Morris Canal in 1831, the town experienced momentous economic development and grew dramatically.

​​​​​​​When the railroad was finally constructed in 1856, it fueled the demand for new housing for commuters. In 1868, Montclair was declared a separate township, after which it continued to grow.
